Burden of Creation

It is perfectly possible to have a clear perception of things
without knowing what one is doing.

Arthur Rimbaud

I like to paint the moment between creation and destruction.

I want to find the beauty in the undefined.

I enjoy playing around with colors, textures and marks to explore different forms and experiment with the various ways this mess can result in something interesting. Into a momentary completeness before it all falls a part.

I find the marks and angles interesting because from day to day or even hour to hour the painting will subtly change in appearance depending on the light source, my mood or other things on my mind.

Visual connections between the forms I see in the painting in the morning appear completely different in the evening.

Change is interesting

A theory that colors, shapes and textures can be arranged in such a way to evoke curiosity, feelings, emotions, memories and thoughts, like a song, you feel it inside without seeing anything immediately recognizable.

Thoughts and feelings lurking deep inside you once forgotten are suddenly stirred up into existence again.

I don't want the painting to be defined.

I want to explore how good intentions at work, in beliefs and in ideas begin with positive motivation but once these intentions aren't allowed to florish as imagined it begins to fester and become distorted locked away in the cage of your mind. In the darkness, lurking, waiting...

We are puzzles assembled from accidental pieces. Randomly fit together for no purpose. Only our minds conjure up a meaning to provide a reason for this existence. We are free. The mind is our salvation and our prison. Placing walls all around us to provide structure in meaningless chaos.

Notes from Phone: Spontaneous Inspiration or Alcohol Induced Insights

I've never understood trying to duplicate a sunset in paint. The focus seems to narrow...

It will always remain what it was intended to be. It was created for no other function than to be viewed, thought about and questioned. Its appearance may change but its purpose never will.

We can go beyond the recognizable and discover something more real. Any landscape, figure or recognizable image is an abstraction of painting itself...

I treat every painting as if I'm creating a person. We (they) all have the same pieces but different arrangements result in much different outcomes...

Thoughts of introspection and the meaning of painting chased with sports and bikini girls.
A painting should be its own entity just like a person but revealing its flaws and imperfections which remain hidden behind the mask of humanity...
